Over the past few years I’ve spent a great deal of time in the Pentland Hills, running, walking, and drawing them from within, upon, and from afar. This small landscape is inspired by the view from the top of the ski slopes at Hillend, looking across the sweeping line of the Pentlands.
The painting captures the quiet beauty of the hills through delicate foreground colours and textures set against the deep blue silhouettes of the landscape beyond. The subtle shifts of light and the layered forms of the hills evoke the calm and openness so familiar to those who spend time here. Paths weave gently through the scene, reflecting how the landscape is shaped not only by ancient natural forces, but also by the countless footsteps, rides, and journeys across it.
This piece is about the atmosphere of the Pentlands — the stillness, space, and sense of perspective they offer. A small painting that brings the beauty and familiarity of the hills into your home, it will resonate with anyone who knows the view from Hillend and the enduring pull of these landscapes.
