Children’s Art Classes

Relaxed, creative art classes for children, taught in small, friendly groups. Our focus is on having fun, exploring different materials, and building confidence through creativity.

What will we do?

DRAWING

  • Drawing will always be part of my classes because I see it as a fundamental building block of art. Just as children practise writing their letters repeatedly at school, drawing is something they need to practise regularly to develop confidence and skill.
  • I often use animals as a starting point because most children enjoy drawing them, but I also bring in lots of different things for them to draw. I’m very happy for children to bring along their own toys or favourite objects too – sometimes that’s what gets them most excited about drawing!
  • For this class, we’ll start with drawing, but that doesn’t mean sitting down and doing the same kind of drawing each time. I like to mix things up and let the children try lots of different materials including pencils, ink and sticks, felt tips, chalk and oil pastels, wax resist and more. We’ll also bring drawing into painting and mixed-media activities.

The idea is that they get to experiment, have fun and gradually discover what different materials can do. Drawing is something we keep coming back to, but hopefully each time they do, they learn something new and become a little more confident.

PAINTING

  • I like to mix up the drawing with different types of painting - sometimes we use watercolours, othertimes acrylics or gouache. Sometimes we mix drawing and painting to make mixed media art.

PRINTMAKING

  • We also use printing techinques - monoprints and blockprints.

3D MODELLING/SCULPTURE

  • And if we have a two day class, we can do clay or other wet sculpture materials - as they need a day to dry after construction, and a day to finish off.

ABOUT SANDRA VICK, art tutor

I have taught art classes for the past 20 years. I have spent time working in schools and as a private tutor. 

My aim is to make my art classes a safe and fun space for children to build their creativity and confidence. I facilitate individual creativity and encourage mutual support in our work ethos.

All my classes are small groups with all materials provided. We do projects using drawing, painting, clay, printmaking, collage, and other techniques. The classes tend to be geared towards the interest of the individual groups.

I have a certificate in understanding Autism with North-East Scotland University and so please contact me if you child has additional support needs to see if we can accommodate them in one of the classes.
