PAINTING: from carnethy 1

Over the past few years I’ve spent a great deal of time in the Pentland Hills — running, walking, drawing, and returning again and again to the views that stay with you long after you leave. This painting is inspired by the familiar view running down Carnethy, a scene recognised by so many people who spend time in the hills walking, cycling, running, or simply escaping into the landscape.

It captures that exhilarating moment of descent when the hills open out before you, with wide skies, textured ground, and a powerful sense of movement and freedom. The shape of the Pentlands against the changing light is instantly recognisable to those who know these routes well, evoking memories of muddy trails, cold air, tired legs, and the quiet reward of being high in the hills.
