BIRDS

These paintings were initially inspired years ago by many walks with my husband’s family who are all keen bird watchers. I was amazed at how my father in law was able to identify a bird purely from its shape, its movement and its habitat.

A move out of Edinburgh city centre to the more rural Midlothian during my Masters in Fine Art at Edinburgh College of Art led to a fascination with the birds around my now architect designed home. Following on from earlier work, on my BA(hons) Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, excluding extraneous noise and information in my environment, the idea of being able to identify a bird from a silhouette appealed, and my work includes an element of movement and hints of behaviour to help with identification.

I spend many hours watching birds, photographing and drawing them in their habitat before starting to compose a painting. It is important to capture exactly how they stand and hold themselves to capture the essence of them. This research is then brought back to the studio and put together to compose my paintings.

The paintings themselves are made over time, building up layers of captured moments in time that are knocked back to be redefined as a new moment is captured.
