Over the past 30 years I've spent hours walking and running in the hills, leaving me with a strong connection and understanding of their shapes and colours. This painting is one in a series of paintings that are imaginary mountains, inspired by the Scottish Highlands and French Alps. Each piece is named using the gaelic word for that shape of mountain - the gaelic language has many words to describe mountains whether they area ridge, a point, a rocky outcrop, a big hump, a shoulder... These paintings use washes of oils and pigments. They have resulted in some beautiful layers of colour, textures and shimmery golds.
There is something both grounding and exhilarating about open spaces - the way they offer an escape from the noise of modern life. Our ancient mountains and hills, formed through volcanic eruptions and sculpted by glaciers, stand as both challenge and refuge. They pull us in, inviting us to explore, to push ourselves, and to find stillness in their presence.
Oil on linen framed in an off-white St Ives frame.
